The economics of large-city Wi-Fi was distorted by EarthLink's upfront willingness, then echoed by other providers, to build networks at no cost to cities with no commitment to purchase services. NPR on Philadelphia's Wi-Fi Situation Works for me. Glenn Fleishman does a good job of telling it like it is when it comes to metropolitan broadband. Given how different cities are, I'm not altogether sure why so many commenters seem intent on divining patterns from past history. Seems we should look at individual projects on their merits, given the youth of this industry and the relative novelty of the technologies involved. I'm reminded of the concept of "Skin in the Game."
