Can You Hear Me Now?

Calling All Luddites - New York Times Tom Friedman describes a scenario wherein the political party that is most adept at adapting cutting edge technology is the political party that wins. And the cutting edge technology du jour? Wireless of course, both cellular and Wi Fi, which put together with blogging, create the communication channel that connects the people to the politician, bringing the wisdom of the crowds to bear on issues that matter to the public (see the Books category of the Orientation Section on this website) for review of this great book by James Surowiecki, entitled The Wisdom of Crowds: Why the Many Are Smarter Than the Few and How Collective Wisdom Shapes Business, Economies, Societies and Nations). Friedman profiles a politician in NYC who is focusing on wireless connectivity in the subway (or rather, the lack thereof), which has become a critical issue after what happened in London last month. And as NYC goes, so goes the rest of the land, so expect a wave of wireless to be on its way, if this holds true for NYC.

Oh, and speaking of things British, I've added Luddite to the Glossary because, well, its one of my favorite stories. The term Luddite describes anyone opposed to technological progress and technological change, and is based on a real story from six years in the early 19th Century in Great Britain (1811-1817), when followers of a General Ludd actually took up arms to stop the modernization of the weaving industry. In the end, many were exiled to Australia or put to death for their part in disrupting the economic and technological progress underway that was part of the British Industrial Revolution. This web site, The Luddites does a better job than I could of telling this fascinating story, with object lessons for today. By the way, Luddite is not a flattering term...
