Florida: From Miami Vice to Miami Nice - Miami Beach, that is

Wireless Miami Beach Check it out - the little town of Miami Beach has a potentially high-profile project that should be worth watching. They may be little, but a lot of money and tourists go through this "hot spot" each year. I can envision some killer tourist applications: Location-based services, maps, city guides, multilingual services, etc. As much excitement there is around deploying these networks, the really good stuff will come when we see new applications that affect how we live.

Well, finally in my back yard. The only issue is that Wireless Oceans has been creating this same network for the past two years. With over 10 hotspots in public areas and 10 hotels and condos I feel we are well on the way to beating the city to the punch. I can see why the city wants the pulic services (fire, police, etc) to have a wireless network, but I don't see why they would not want to work with local companies (ie. us) to proving the service of internet access. They dont give free phone or TV service. That my two cents for now...have a great day

As a citizen of Miami Beach, I am deeply concerned that my taxes may be going towards such a project as Wireless access. With poor condition of the streets in South Beach, the rampant crime, litter and general uncleanliness of the City, there is surely most socially useful project to spend our taxes on. Companies like Wireless Oceans, Atlantic Broadband and BellSouth already provide Broadband to whoever wants it. Let the private sector continue providing this need and allowing us citizens to choose how we spend our money.

There are three City comissioners and the Mayor up for re-election this year. I will take great joy in mobilizing votes to get them removed if they keep up this kind of esoteric, lobbyist centric spending.
